Just Engaged? Your First 5 Steps to Finding “The Dress”

Congratulations - you’re engaged! Once the excitement settles and the ring selfies are posted, one happy question tends to rise to the top of the list: when do I find my dress? It’s one of the most joyful parts of planning a wedding, but with endless inspiration online, it can also feel a little overwhelming to know where to begin.

Take a breath. Finding your gown should feel like a celebration, not a chore. Here are the first five steps to start your search with confidence and joy.

1. Set a Comfortable Budget First

Before you fall in love with a gown, decide what you’re comfortable spending - and remember the dress budget includes more than the gown itself. Factor in alterations, accessories, and any customizations. Knowing your range from the start means every dress you try is one you can actually say yes to, and it keeps the experience stress-free.

2. Gather Inspiration - But Stay Open

Save the styles that catch your eye on Pinterest or Instagram, and notice what they have in common. That said, keep an open mind: a gown on a hanger (or a model) can look completely different on you, and so many brides end up falling for something they never expected. Inspiration is a starting point, not a rulebook.

Flat lay of wedding inspiration items including swatches of pink, beige, and ivory fabric, two wedding dresses photos, dried flowers, Pantone color card, gold wedding rings on beige tile, lace fabric, cards with phrases like 'A softer kind of love' and 'Details create the story', and soft satin and tulle fabrics, all in muted blush and champagne tones. 3. Understand Your Timeline

Timing matters more than most brides expect. Special-order gowns are typically made and delivered over several months, so starting your search around nine to twelve months before the wedding gives you room to order, receive, and alter your dress without a rush. On a shorter timeline? Don’t worry - off-the-rack gowns you can take home make a beautiful last-minute option.

4. Book Your First Appointment

There’s only so much you can learn from a screen - the real magic happens when you put a gown on. Booking an appointment gives you a private fitting space and a dedicated stylist who can guide you, and weekends fill up quickly, so it’s worth reserving early. Come comfortable, come curious, and let yourself enjoy the moment.

5. Keep Your Circle Small and Trusted

It’s tempting to invite everyone, but a smaller group of people who truly know you keeps the focus where it belongs - on how you feel in the dress. Two or three trusted voices are usually all you need. (More on choosing your crew in an upcoming post!)
